Special Issue: Globalization, Production, Employment and Poverty
Abstract
The research reported in this special issue was funded by the Department for International Development of the UK government, as part of a programme of research on globalization and poverty, under the project entitled Globalization, Production and Poverty: Macro, Meso and Micro-level Studies (Project R7623). The focus of the papers (one introductory paper and eight further papers) in this issue is primarily on employment as a factor in poverty reduction. In some of the papers the emphasis is on the quantitative dimensions in terms of numbers of jobs and wage levels. Others however bring in qualitative considerations such as the stability of employment and workers’ own perceptions which are more closely related to the livelihood approach. Research was conducted in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Kenya and South Africa.
