STIs and HIV in Pakistan: from analysis to action.

Abstract

A survey on levels of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV in Pakistan was conducted. It was found that while HIV was currently found principally among injecting drug users, there was a strong possibility that it could spread to other groups and become a much greater threat to public health. Five key interventions to stem the transmission of HIV/STIs were identified: (1) needle and syringe exchange programmes for injecting drug users; (2) comprehensive sexual health care for male and transgender sex workers; (3) sexual and reproductive health care for female sex workers; (4) targeted behaviour change communication for most-at-risk groups; and (5) addressing stigma and discrimination, and promoting and protecting the human rights of those at greatest risk. This issue of the journal contains 6 articles describing the research in more detail.
