Students’ perspectives on health and safety in schools. Using photography to address issues of health and safety in Indonesian, UK and Zambian schools
Abstract
This report details many health and safety issues students have brought to our attention by taking photographs of their school environment. For members of a school community who must live with and adapt to the reality of daily life in school, sometimes even seemingly obvious hazards to health and safety may go unnoticed. Students’ photographs can be helpful in bringing these more obvious issues (as well as the less obvious) back into focus and provide a frame of reference and a record to track future developments. Issues of health and safety in schools are inexorably linked with the broader concept of educational inclusion. Although there are many aspects of inclusion, meaningful inclusion for all students is not possible without safe, healthy and comfortable learning environments.
