Studies on host range of the banana lesion nematode, Pratylenchus goodeyii
Abstract
The banana lesion nematode (Pratylenchus goodeyi) is an important parasite of banana in eastern Africa. However, its host range is not yet fully known. A study to establish its host range was, therefore carried out, particularly with indigenous African plants. None of the 34 weed species belonging to 15 families, and 33 weed species belonging to 14 families, collected from established nematode-infested banana fields in Bushenyi in western Uganda and Kawanda Agricultural Research Institute in central Uganda, respectively, harbored P. goodeyi. Six weed species common in banana fields and five crop species commonly intercropped with banana were evaluated for host status of P. goodeyi in pot experiments. The weed species Ageratum conyzoides, Bidens pilosa and Crassocephalum crepidioides, and cassava and groundnut did not harbor any P. goodeyi. The weed species Commelina benghalensis and Senecio disfolius, and sweetpotato, harbored trace numbers, but were non-hosts of P.goodeyi. Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and maize (Zea mays) were hosts of P. goodeyi.
