Abstract

This working brief sits with the series of reports on Charcoal Policy and Feedstock Management as part of PISCES’ contribution to creating a sustainable charcoal sector in Western Kenya. The paper discusses some of the trees and shrubs that are suitable for sustainable charcoal production, for example Tarchonanthus camphoratusis (Leleshwa), Prosopis juliflora (Mathenge), Acacia drepanolobium (Whistling thorn) and bamboo. It also presents case studies on best practices in tree management from Sudan, Kenya and Uganda.
