Sustainable waste management in developing countries

A series of knowledge pieces in the form of presentations on solid waste

Abstract

The helpdesk request ‘Opportunities and entry points to mainstream best practices in solid waste management in low income countries’ was undertaken to provide a series of knowledge pieces in the form of presentations around key aspects of solid waste that will inform DFID on how and where solid waste might feature in its delivery programme and support the global goals.

Part A of the presentation on sustainable waste management, made to DFID on 22 February 2016, considers the sustainable waste management (SWM) problem. It asks why is SWM important? What are the drivers. It then reviews the current status and trends before examining the importance of integrated sustainable waste management, in particular governance factors, and looks at the World Bank perspective.

Part B of the presentation covers alternative solutions: - some local/innovative approaches, and making the case for action and reflections on success factors.
