Taking Community-Led Total Sanitation to Scale: Movement, Spread and Adaptation.

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of CLTS and reviews the literature on scaling-up. The paper then examines other approaches that have been successfully scaled-up – Participatory Rural Appraisals (PRA), Reflect, Community Integrated Pest Management and System of Rice Intensification (SRI) – before looking at the CLTS experience. Finally, the paper outlines how scaling-up and spread could be better understood.

The paper's findings provide some useful insights on the principles and strategies for scaling-up and spread of participatory and people-centred approaches. The paper argues that recognising the importance of spread and adaptation will be essential for making CLTS a widespread movement.
