Abstract

This is the report of a dissemination workshop which was held in Bolivia where mercury contamination associated with artisanal gold mining is a major environmental problem. In addition, there are currently major concerns being expressed by both Government and environmental action groups with regard to the environmental impact of both historical and future mining activities. These impacts have been particularly felt by the rural poor in the Pilcomayo river basin and the urban poor in the Oruro mining district. It was, therefore, particularly timely to hold a workshop in La Paz in order to provide background information on the nature and extent of contamination associated with current mining activities and also on the value for environmental studies of base line geochemical data. The workshop was intended to provide a forum for discussions between professionals and academics involved in mining, mineral exploration and environmental monitoring as well as representatives of the main environmental NGO's in Bolivia.
