Teacher Education at a Distance: Impact on Development in the Community
Abstract
The objective of this study was to reveal areas in which training teachers by distance education (DE) methods can reach beyond the immediate audience to assist development in the wider community.
Studies were undertaken in three countries, Guyana, Uganda and Nigeria, each with differing experiences of using distance education to train their teachers. In-country studies were coordinated by local researchers, with a view to the research contributing to the professional development of those implementing it. The capacity building nature of the research was considered to be of overriding importance.
This report discusses the context of the research, the research design and methodology, impacts on the local community and the school/education system, and the implications for the communities, national policy makers, institutional policy makers, for teacher education, and for future research.
