Technological or trade competitiveness: chicken or egg?

Abstract

This brief discusses: (1) which comes first: success in international trade or competitiveness in technology?; (2) does innovation in technology help a country's exports become more competitive in international trade or does success in international markets provide the incentive for technological advance?; and (3) how does domestic competition affect a country's performance in both technology and international trade?Lessons from Malaysia's electronics sector are considered.
