The impact of poverty and inequality on the dignity of lone mothers in South Africa.

Abstract

This is the second working paper from the DFID/ESRC project on 'Lone Mothers in South Africa - The role of social security in respecting and protecting dignity'. Drawing on material from focus groups with lone mothers in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape in South Africa, Part 1 comprises an analysis of portrayals of dignity in relation to worthiness, self-respect, self-esteem and autonomy. Part 2 presents material on the impact of poverty and inequality on dignity, in relation to techniques to survive poverty, family relationships, standing within the community, and the personal toll.
