The Impact of Small-Scale Mining Operations on Economies and Livelihoods in Low- to Middle-Income Countries

A synthesis study and 3 country case studies on Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda

Abstract

These studies aim to understanding the economic contribution of small-scale mining in East Africa. The synthesis study was commissioned to strengthen the evidence-base on small-scale mining in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda and maximise the potential of the sector to promote inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction. There are 3 country cases. The contract was awarded to PACT Global UK, and implemented in collaboration with the Alliance for Responsible Mining.

This research is part of the Department for International development’s ‘Strengthening Research Systems for Poverty Reduction in East Africa’ programme
