The role of macroscopic sputum quality assessments to optimise sputum testing for tuberculosis

This study covers Ca Mau Province, Vietnam

Abstract

This study examines community-wide active case finding for TB using Xpert MTB/RIF as the primary screening tool in Ca Mau Province, Vietnam.

The objective is to determine whether macroscopic sputum quality characteristics (sputum colour and volume) can be used to predict Xpert MTB-negative sputum and hence exclude sputum samples from testing.

This research was supported by the UK Department for International Development’s Operational Research Capacity Building Programme led by the International Union Against TB and Lung Disease (The Union)
