The social composition of skill acquisition and its labour market outcomes in Ghana.
Abstract
This document sets out the terms of reference and work programme on skills acquisition. It sketches the current policy context of skills acquisition in Ghana, and points to some preliminary lessons learned from a first two weeks of researching this theme in Southern Ghana. The main research question and research objectives under this strand are discussed. Four possible stages of the work are proposed, and a detailed field-guide is added for the first two stages which have already been applied in the current research. Provisional outlines for the second two stages are also included. The ways in which the education and training of individuals affect their future lives and livelihoods are the focus of the study. It also studies how trainees from poor backgrounds who successfully enter formal or self-employment learn the things that make them succeed.
