The use and maintenance of animal-drawn equipment for smallholder crop production: costs and benefits.
Abstract
Farmer's difficulties in using and maintaining the animal-drawn implements for land preparation and weeding were investigated. The project was carried out in Masvingo Province in Zimbabwe with more tha 30 smallholder households participating in the research. The costs and benefits of maintaining and using equipment properly were examined through farmer trials based on the use of their ploughs, as the equipment example, for the production of maize and cotton crops. Constraints other than direct financial costs were also considered and discussed.
