Towards Microbicide Rollout in sub-Saharan Africa: Ensuring microbicides are an effective tool for HIV prevention and women’s empowerment.
Abstract
This briefing describes the potential importance of vaginal microbicides in integrating HIV prevention and women's empowerment, and the issues that need to be addressed to ensure that they fulfil this potential: what level of efficacy is required for them to be introduced; whether they should be free at the point of access; how men can be involved while still empowering women; and how microbicides can be marketed without stigmatizing them or their users.
