Understanding and measuring determinants of smoking initiation among youth female in Yogyakarta municipality, Indonesia.

Abstract

In Yogyakarta Municipality, smoking prevalence among girls is higher than smoking prevalence among all women in the population. This evidence shows the tendency of increasing female smokers in the future. This study provides data on how people initiate smoking, especially girls, and what kind of policies are needed to control smoking among young people. Quantitative data showed that role models who smoke (siblings and peers who smoke), attachment to peer, attitude toward smoking and advertisement exposure were significantly related to smoking initiation. It is recommended to control existing role models among young relatives for short term tobacco control.
