Unsafe Migration towards Europe and USA. Status of Knowledge, May 2010
Abstract
This study was conducted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It analyses the official statistics on migrant smuggling to the European Union and USA and aims to provide knowledge on the trends, flows and patterns of unsafe migration in these two regions. Unsafe migration includes migrants who are victimized as a result of their migratory experience, including victims of human trafficking and smuggled migrants who are victims of their smugglers. The paper analyzes in detail how the economic downturn has impacted on these migration flows. The final chapter provides a way forward to better understand how to monitor populations at risk of unsafe migration, and steer migrants and would-be-migrants to safer migratory paths.
