Update on Some Recent Developments in Community-Led Total Sanitation.

Abstract

This paper is intended to complement IDS Working Paper 257 (November 2005), by giving a short update on recent developments in the rapidly changing field of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) in six countries in South and South East Asia. The paper outlines experiences, lessons and future plans on a country by country basis (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia and Nepal), also highlighting particular challenges within the different country contexts. It is suggested that the outlook for the future spread of CLTS is hugely encouraging, as long as the counteracting forces of subsidy programmes operating in parallel are overcome.
