Waste recycling through urban farming in Hubli-Dharwad.

Abstract

Following an introduction to India, its agricultural sector, and in particular the city of Hubli-Dharwad, Karnataka, the issue of urban agriculture in Hubli-Dharwad is addressed. Particular reference is made to urban employment in agricultural activities. The different types of urban farming systems present in the city are reviewed. Further sections cover: food security, nutrition and health; urban agriculture and the urban environment (use of urban organic wastes and water); contribution of urban agriculture to the household economy; gender aspects; current policies regarding urban agriculture; and constraints and opportunities.
