Waterways and livelihoods: improving rural access and mobility through the development of rural water transport.

Abstract

This Toolkit promotes the integration of Rural Water Transport (RWT) both within the transport sector and across other development sectors. Not for its own sake but because it has the potential to eliminate poverty and reduce isolation. For many of the poorest people in the world water transport is their only means of mobility and access to basic services. It provides jobs and

access to other employment opportunities, and also presents enormous potential for addressing isolation while minimising impacts on the

environment.

This Toolkit provides a brief overview of RWT issues and advice on how to promote these issues to key audiences, i.e. those individuals and organisations who can help you to incorporate RWT issues at a policy level and in practice.
