What difference do schools make? A mixed methods study in secondary schools in Peru

This study contributes to the scarce literature on school effectiveness in secondary education in Peru

Abstract

This study contributes to the scarce literature on school effectiveness in secondary education in Peru by addressing the following questions:

  1. What educational processes within schools are most influential in mathematics and reading comprehension?,

and in the case of schools more effective,

  1. what is the importance that principals, teachers and students give to the variables of school processes to explain educational results?

A mixed method design is used that follows a sequential explanatory design. The results indicate the relevance of the variables of the school process at the school level. Therefore, educational programs carried out by local and national governments must pay more attention to the dynamics within the school to mitigate educational inequalities, upwards equalizing opportunities for children in impoverished public schools.

This is an output of the Young Lives at Work programme
