Abstract
Evidence from the review suggests that good results can be achieved if the rural road design is appropriate, supervision is good, and maintenance is carried out. However, the review does not enable claims to be made that technologies are financially, economically, operationally, environmentally or socially sustainable. The overall messages are that there is no panacea to low-volume rural roads provision and flexibility in technological provision depending on the various geographical, climatic, social and development phase context is necessary.
