Abstract

This paper considers how a sizeable percentage of African states have been able to avoid military coups since independence, using case studies of Tanzania and Zambia. The author examines how civilian control over the military has been maintained, by considering theories of 'elite bargains' developed by the CSRC, as well as addressing the continued avoidance of military take-over despite the advent of multi-party politics.
