Working the Sahel: Environment and society in Northern Nigeria.
Abstract
Working the Sahel uses empirical data to indicate that the \"crisis\" of degradation in the Sahel can be contained, and atleast in some areas is being contained, through the efforts of rural land users themselves. Drawing on four years of field research, this book looks at how farmers in the semi-arid Sahelian region of north-east Niger cope with their harsh environment. It explores how farmers manage biological resources, crop and non-crop biodiversity and soil fertility, and analyses the diversity, flexibility and adaptability of household systems of resource management. The authors conclude by examining differentiation between households, attempting to define poverty in a rural Sahelian context, and by locating the micro-scale resource management systems in a broader policy context.
