The Queen Victoria Seafarers Rest is based in London and provides long-term and transitional accommodation as well as welfare support to active and retired seafarers, veterans of the armed forces and others in need.
About the Queen Victoria Seafarers Rest
The Queen Victoria Seafarers Rest is the Seafarers Mission of the Methodist Church and has been providing housing and welfare support in the East End of London for over 180 years.
Their 175-bedded accommodation is situated in Poplar, where their overarching aim is to help their residents from ‘just about’ surviving towards securing a home of their own.
Their welfare team works with external specialist services and organisations to help residents with practical, emotional and pastoral support services – each tailored to meet the complex needs of individual service users – to prepare them for a return to independent living.
This includes:
- providing advice on benefits and helping to secure their entitlements
- giving residents the confidence to undertake training necessary to seek employment
- supporting the process of securing their own housing and building their capacity to manage a tenancy responsibly
- empowering residents to overcome poor mental health or alcohol/drug addiction by facilitating access to professional therapy
They provide residents with an en-suite bedroom on a bed-and-breakfast basis and communal facilities, include a modern restaurant, evening coffee shop, TV lounges with satellite channels, free wi-fi, activity centre, cinema room, gym and garden.
They offer sports facilities such as snooker, badminton and table tennis, and their team of volunteers organise a programme of leisure activities, including film nights, quizzes and days trips. They also have a Chapel and a ‘multi-faith’ or ‘quiet’ room providing space for quiet reflection for all faiths.
