Service Dogs UK
Service Dogs UK is a charity based in West Sussex, the South West and Essex that provides rescue dogs and accredited training to veterans who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
About Service Dogs UK
Service Dogs UK is an assistance dog organisation. They provide:
- a rescue dog that has been assessed as suitable for assistance dog work
- support from their expert training team that help the veteran to train the dog under their supervision
Eligible veterans must have been given a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder from a suitably qualified psychiatrist or psychologist.
They have 3 training hubs that service their local areas:
- South Coast Hub, West Sussex
- South West Hub, Somerton
- Essex Hub, Chelmsford
Full training lasts for 9 to 12 month.
Veterans must commit to the programme and be able to get to and from their training hubs twice a week for 2 sessions lasting 2 hours, until they become accredited.
Following this, veterans must re-test each year. Service Dogs UK will provide support for the lifetime of the partnership with the dog.
The charity pays all the costs of running the programme until the partnership becomes accredited. After 8 to 12 weeks, the veteran must pay 50% of the dog’s insurance costs.
Following successful accreditation, the veteran is responsible for 100% of all costs for the dog.
