Sight Scotland Veterans
Sight Scotland Veterans provides free support to veterans affected by sight loss in Scotland, helping them regain confidence, restore their independence and make new connections.
Established in 1915, Sight Scotland Veterans gives support to all veterans with sight loss, including National Service veterans, no matter if they lost their sight during or after service. They also provide support for family members and those caring for veterans with sight loss.
The majority of veterans they support have lost their sight through age, conditions such as macular degeneration or other reasons unrelated to their service.
Their outreach and rehabilitation support covers all local authority areas in Scotland. Outreach workers provide emotional and practical support to veterans with sight loss based in their local area and organise social activities to introduce individuals to other veterans of the Sight Scotland Veterans community.
They can also provide specialist equipment free of charge to aid independence in day-to-day tasks – from talking watches, cooking aids and electronic magnifiers, to digital technology such as smartphones or tablets with specialist software for people with sight loss.
The charity’s expert rehabilitation team offer one-to-one assessments and tailored training for specialist equipment and cane and mobility training.
Sight Scotland Veterans also runs 2 activity hubs for veterans with sight loss:
- the Linburn Centre in Wilkieston, West Lothian
- the Hawkhead Centre in Paisley, Renfrewshire
