Enzai: AI Policy Centre
Case study from Enzai.
Background & Description
Enzai’s AI Policy Centre enables organisations to comply with regulations and standards efficiently. Equipped with policy packs covering various existing regulations, the AI Policy Centre offers organisations the ability to tailor policy packs to suit their specific needs, as well as to create and manage bespoke policies to fit internal practices or meet specific obligations. The ready-made policy packs have been designed by leading lawyers in the space and can be adopted within organisations to put a framework in place around the development and use of AI.
The AI Policy Centre acts as a point of reference and central repository for an organisation’s policies, enabling consistency in implementation and providing assurance across teams and divisions. Recognising the complexity of regulatory compliance in a field that is constantly evolving, the tool allows users maximum flexibility. This ensures that policies are updated as needed and that all relevant stakeholders are informed of the changes.
Relevant Cross-Sectoral Regulatory Principles
Safety, Security and Robustness
The AI Policy Centre functions as a key tool to enable the consistent and reliable management of AI systems. Policies within the tool can be regularly updated to reflect changes in external or internal requirements by adding document sections or amending existing ones, making the Policy Centre the central repository for policies across the organisation. By providing easy access to policies, the tool allows stakeholders to develop and deploy AI systems with confidence that their work will meet the latest technical standards for safe and robust performance.
Appropriate Transparency & Explainability
To meet regulatory standards for transparency, having readily available and shareable policies is key. The AI Policy Centre serves as a guide that can be easily applied and referenced to ensure the appropriate degree of transparency and explainability is met for a given use case.
Fairness
The AI Policy Centre is a crucial and foundational step in the process of detecting potential bias and fairness issues with AI systems. By selecting the appropriate policies, organisations can ensure compliance with anti-bias legislation, such as New York’s Bias Audit.
Accountability and governance
When customising or creating policies in the AI Policy Centre, organisations can establish guidelines to be enforced in later stages of the compliance process. This allows organisations to establish accountability and clarify responsibility or ownership. There is governance within the policy centre itself - only users with the right permissions can amend or create new policies, and version controls provide reassurance that changes are well documented and traceable.
Why we took this approach
Enzai strongly believes in the ability of standards and regulations to ensure that powerful technologies such as AI are used for good. The need for humans to oversee these incredible systems has never been greater and a strong governance structure is essential for oversight to be effective. At the same time, organisations require a solution that will allow them to operate at scale and that will not stifle innovation and productivity. As the regulatory landscape becomes increasingly complex, there is a need to organise and clarify policies within organisations in an effective and efficient way. The AI Policy Centre was developed as a central repository of policies to enable adequate AI governance processes.
Benefits to the organisation using the technique
Enzai’s AI Policy Centre provides an organisation with a holistic overview of their policies around AI use. This includes both external policies, such as the UK’s Pro-Innovation Framework and the upcoming EU AI Act, and internal policies. This is a crucial step in ensuring full compliance with all necessary regulations and the highest possible governance standards. It provides greater clarity and consistency to an organisation’s AI usage and aids in increasing the robustness and effectiveness of governance and compliance activities.
Limitations of the approach
Enzai’s AI Policy Centre alone cannot ensure that an organisation meets its regulatory requirements. It is only one essential step of this process. Enzai has developed further tools (specifically, the AI Model Inventory, Governance Hub, and Compliance Assessment tools) which when used in conjunction with the Policy Centre allow an organisation to achieve the highest possible governance standards.
