Driver and vehicles account: sign in or set up

Use your account to check your details held by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

You can:

  • view your driving record, for example vehicles you can drive
  • check your penalty points or disqualifications
  • add and view details of your vehicles - including when the MOT expires
  • check the tax rates for your vehicles
  • set up vehicle tax reminders by email and SMS - if you pay tax every 6 or 12 months
  • choose to stop getting vehicle tax reminders by post
  • renew your photocard driving licence
  • view a photo of your driving licence (you’ll need a valid photocard driving licence)
  • create a licence ‘check code’ to share your driving record with someone, for example a car hire company 
  • view your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) and tachograph information, if you have these

Who can use this service

To use this service you must have one of the following:

  • a driving licence issued in England, Scotland or Wales
  • a vehicle log book (V5C) in your name

You need a UK passport or the document you used to set up your online immigration status.

You cannot set up vehicle tax reminders if you pay by direct debit. 

This service is also available in Welsh (Cymraeg).

DVLA will use your email address to check if you have a driver and vehicles account.

Before you start

To create an account you’ll need:

  • an email address
  • addresses where you’ve lived for the last 3 years
  • your UK passport (either current or expired within the past 12 months) or the document you used to set up your online immigration status

You might be asked for additional information, such as:

  • your driving licence number
  • your National Insurance number
  • the vehicle log book (V5C registration certificate) reference number

It usually takes about 5 minutes to create an account. DVLA will send you a confirmation email when you have created your account.

Documents used to set up online immigration status

If you’re not a UK citizen you can prove your identity using the reference number from the document you used to set up your online immigration status. The document will be one of the following:

  • a non-UK passport
  • a biometric residency permit
  • a biometric residency card
  • a national identity card

You can do the following without creating an account:

Get vehicle tax reminders by post

If you pay for your vehicle tax every 6 or 12 months you may also get a reminder to tax your vehicle (V11 letter) by post.

You can choose not to get paper reminders when you set up digital reminders in your account.
