Future policy framework for biomethane production: call for evidence
Call for evidence description
This call for evidence summarises our initial thinking on a future policy framework to support biomethane after the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) closes for applications, and seeks evidence to inform policy development.
Topics covered include:
- the potential design and scope of a future policy framework: how to address barriers to market growth, the potential uptake of biomethane production methods such as advanced gasification, combined heat and power plant conversions and expansions, landfill gas and on-farm anaerobic digestion (AD), their commercial viability and value for money
- the strategic role of biomethane production in achieving net zero and delivering energy security: insight on the potential benefits of setting a biomethane production target
- costs and revenues associated with biomethane production from AD, including potential additional revenue streams: it asks for evidence on revenues and how government could accelerate sector growth as well as how to bolster potential revenue streams and reduce reliance on government incentives
- the current sustainability landscape of the production of biomethane via AD in the UK: why it is critical that biomethane production contributes optimal carbon savings through robust sustainability criteria that minimises environmental impacts and accounts for the latest technologies and policies, such as carbon capture
- how planning and permitting can act as enabling elements of a framework: the possible benefits and risks of changing regulatory standards, the role of industry and government in determining the location of plants
The call is open to all to respond, but we welcome views in particular from leaders in the field, with interests in:
- sustainable heat
- power
- transport fuels
- circular agriculture
- low carbon waste management
We’re also keen to learn from other similar sectors and international comparators.
We will use the feedback and evidence from this call to inform the development of a new policy framework ahead of a more detailed future consultation.
