Area SEND thematic reviews

Reports on thematic visits of local area partnership arrangements for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspect a small number of local areas each year to investigate a particular aspect of the special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) system in depth.

These visits help us to identify good practice and provide insights for Ofsted, CQC, government, strategic leaders, and frontline education, health and social care practitioners. They will be used to promote improvement in the sector and update our approach to inspection, as appropriate.

Alternative provision

A review of how local areas commission and oversee the use of alternative provision (AP) and the impact of arrangements on children and young people.

Preparation for adulthood

A review of how local areas support children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) to prepare for adulthood.

Children not in school
