Digital Sector Economic Estimates: Earnings
This series brings together the most up to date Digital Sector earnings datasets.
About
DSIT earnings estimates provide important information on earnings within the Digital Sector.
Included estimates:
DSIT currently release (or plan to release) the following estimates for earnings:
- headline measures of earnings calculated based on the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This survey uses employee data sampled from the PAYE system, but does not provide detailed employee characteristics. The ASHE dataset provides a snapshot of earnings in the UK for April of each year, with DSIT planning to produce estimates for employee median annual earnings, median weekly earnings, and the gender Pay Gap
- hourly earnings estimates are calculated based on the Annual Population Survey (APS) produced by the ONS. The APS provides self-reported earnings data and estimates are therefore less robust than those from the ASHE. The APS includes more demographic information and can be used to estimate earnings for different demographic groups.
For information on how these estimates are produced please see the relevant technical report for each release.
In releases before April 2024, figures for the Digital Sector (and its subsectors, including Telecommunications) were produced by DCMS as part of their DCMS Sectors Economic Estimates series.
DSIT have recently concluded a consultation on the planned future of the Digital Sector Economic Estimates series - the DSIT response to this consultation can be accessed using this link.
