UK Innovation Survey

This collection brings together all documents relating to the UK Innovation Survey (UKIS).

The UK Innovation Survey (UKIS) is the main data source for business innovation in the UK. The survey is conducted every 2 years, and is used widely across government to help improve policy, and by the research community for understanding the innovation landscape.

The survey focuses on business adoption of innovation through new and improved products and services, investments in different types of innovation, and changes in business structures, management, design and marketing innovations. It also asks businesses about the drivers which motivate and barriers to innovation.

UKIS 2023 is the UK’s thirteenth survey of this type. The survey was funded and developed by the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and administered by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on behalf of DBT and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

The statistical annexes for 2023, 2021, 2019 and 2017 are available in the main reports; these were published as separate documents in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015.

More historic information prior to 2009 is available from the National Archives website.

UKIS 2023 went into field in mid-April 2023. The Documents section below contains ‘UK Innovation Survey (UKIS) – Privacy Notice’. This privacy notice sets out how we will process and use business data for UKIS 2023 and future iterations of the survey. It sets out how data will be processed, kept securely and confidentially and, where necessary, shared with other government departments/ Devolved Administrations, approved contractors and accredited researchers for statistical purposes only.
