Current role holder

Sir Nic Dakin MP

Sir Nic Dakin was appointed Junior Lord of the Treasury (Government Whip) on 10 July 2024 and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice on 23 July 2024.

He was elected as the MP for Scunthorpe in July 2024, having previously held the seat from 2010 to 2019.

Education

Nic holds a BA in History from Hull University and a PGCE from King’s College London.

Political career

Nic was the Shadow Minister for Schools from 2015 to 2016 and Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons in 2015. He was also an opposition Whip from 2011 to 2015 and 2016 to 2019.

While serving as an MP from 2010 to 2019, Nic chaired several All-Party Parliamentary Groups including: Steel and Metal Related Industries; Pancreatic Cancer; Education, Skills and Employment; Bioethanol.

Before serving as an MP, Nic was leader of North Lincolnshire Council from 1997 to 2003.

Nic was knighted in the 2020 Birthday Honours for political service.

Career outside politics

Prior to entering politics, Nic trained as a teacher - teaching English in Sweden and then at John Leggott College, Scunthorpe, where he later became Principal.

Nic is currently a trustee of Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare (North Lincolnshire) and of North Lincolnshire MIND. He is also a Board Member of Hull & Humber Chamber.

Personal life

Nic is married and has 3 grown-up children.
