Concern at growing tension in Cote d'Ivoire
Minister for Africa Henry Bellingham said that everyone must "accept the will of the Ivorian people" as expressed in the Presidential election.
“The UK remains very concerned by the growing tension in Cote d’Ivoire. Everyone must accept the will of the Ivorian people as expressed at the Presidential election on 28 November. Those who do not, and who threaten the stability of the country will bear the consequences of their actions.
The decision taken at yesterday’s European Union Foreign Affairs Council makes clear the EU position as part of a united international community (including the African Union, ECOWAS and the UN), and signals the EU’s intention to adopt restrictive measures against individuals who threaten the peace process and challenge the proper outcome of the elections.”
