Green GB Week: Supporting Clean Growth in Peru
This week is highlighting UK-funded activities that support clean growth in Peru
The British Government’s first annual Green GB Week is highlighting the opportunities clean growth offers and raising understanding of how we can contribute to tackling climate change. The UK has led the world to date in cutting emissions while creating wealth. Between 1990 and 2016, the UK reduced its emissions by over 40% while growing the economy by more than two-thirds – the best performance in the G7 on a per person basis.
The global move to cleaner economic growth – through low carbon technologies and the more efficient use of resource – is one of the greatest industrial opportunities of our time. This is why the British Government has put clean growth at the heart of both the Clean Growth Strategy, and the Industrial Strategy through the Clean Growth Grand Challenge.
Launched on 15 October 2018, Green GB Week is highlighting the scope of our work in Peru, from green finance and sustainable infrastructure, to receding tropical glaciers and microplastic debris in our oceans.

The City of London leads the world in green finance and we are working with Peru to mobilise the finance that will be needed to deliver the transition to a low-carbon economy. A Guide to Green Bonds in Peru was launched at the Lima Stock Exchange earlier this year.
-
We are developing sustainable infrastructure that is resilient to and mitigates the effects of climate change. The UK has provided £177 for a regional Sustainable Infrastructure Programme implemented by the Inter-American Development Bank.
-
Innovation is key to addressing the effects of climate change. This is a pillar of the joint academic research between the UK and Peru under the Newton Fund, including work on Peru’s receding tropical glaciers.
-
Over 30 British and Peruvian researchers and scientists are working together to tackle the problem of microplastics in our oceans thanks to the Newton Fund. They met in Lima for the first time last week.

10 years after the UK’s Climate Change Law’s ambitious carbon reduction targets, we are working with Peru to share our experience and we have brought solar power to schools in some of the most remote areas of Peru, from the highlands of Arequipa, to rural areas of Piura and Iquitos.
