Alastair Groom
Biography
Alastair was appointed as a Non-executive Member in October 2021.
Alastair is an independent hands-on finance professional practitioner with thirty years’ experience in understanding business strategic, commercial and financial issues and assisting major organisations undergoing structural, financial, operational and efficiency challenges. He also has a wide range of M&A Transaction Services experience, ranging from acting as Reporting Accountant on major flotations, listed company acquisitions and private due diligence. He has worked extensively across Defence, Healthcare and Central Government. He was 28 years at KPMG, of which 16 years were as an Equity Partner.

- Head of Public Sector Financial Management Consulting, KPMG 2010 to 2016
- Head of Healthcare for KPMG UK and Europe 2005 to 2006
Alastair is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA ICAEW) and holds a BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering (Microelectronics) from the University of Edinburgh.
Non-executive member, SSRO
The SSRO Non-executive members are responsible for:
- providing independent and constructive challenge
- establishing the strategic direction of the SSRO (within a policy and resources framework agreed with ministers)
- overseeing the development and implementation of strategies, plans and priorities
- overseeing the development and review of key performance targets including financial targets
- ensuring that the public body complies with all statutory and administrative requirements on the use of public funds
