Research into the perception, by people aged 16 to 24, of careers in the sectors of:

  • aviation
  • maritime

The research project interviewed individuals about their:

  • career decisions
  • consideration of different career sectors
  • perceptions of aviation and maritime careers as well as the perceived barriers for entry into those sectors

The fieldwork of the study was conducted between February and April 2021 and comprised:

  1. an online survey with 2,326 individuals
  2. 5 focus groups comprising 28 individuals
  3. 30 in-depth personal interviews

This research provides evidence to support the department’s Reach for the Sky and Maritime 2050 skills programmes, which promote aviation and maritime careers to young people.
