Details

This prison service instruction (PSI) describes how children and young people should be cared for in a secure setting. It applies to all children and young people (including 18 year olds) held in young offender institutions.

It outlines the elements of daily life for children and young people that differ from adults and emphasises the importance of positive influences on their development.

It covers:

  • maintaining a safe and secure environment
  • promoting and maintaining good behaviour
  • promoting health and emotional resilience
  • personal development
  • learning, skills, physical education and resettlement

This is a current PSI. It came into effect on 1 April 2012 and was last updated on 27 January 2020.
