City Deal: Newcastle

The City Deal for Newcastle is part of the first wave of City Deals to get the go-ahead from government.

Details

The deal includes plans to:

  • create an Accelerated Development Zone (ADZ) for Newcastle and Gateshead to unlock city centre growth
  • secure a further £500 million in private sector investment into the marine and offshore sector
  • establish Newcastle as a low carbon Pioneer City, working in partnership to accomplish its smart city ambitions and carbon reduction target of 34% by 2020
  • improve employment opportunities
  • develop a Joint Investment Plan with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), using HCA resources and Newcastle’s £25 million Future Homes Fund, to create 15,000 homes within Newcastle’s urban area
  • reduce congestion on the A1 Western Bypass, working with government and local partners to reduce journey times on one of the most congested links in the national network
  • invest in super-connected broadband infrastructure
