The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) completed a review of the Coal Authority as part of the government’s Public Bodies Review Programme. It was started in April 2023 and concluded in March 2024.

The review considered the effectiveness of the Coal Authority in meeting its objectives, and makes recommendations. The scope of the review included:

  • efficacy
  • efficiency
  • governance
  • accountability
