Competition summary: The Invisible Battlespace
Updated 4 September 2018
1. Background
This Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) challenge led competition seeks proposals to explore the benefits that innovative technologies can bring to military front-line capabilities, in applications across the contested Electromagnetic Spectrum.
With ever increasing demands placed upon the Electromagnetic Environment there is, more than ever, a requirement for military capability to be able to dynamically sense, understand, communicate, manage and conduct Electromagnetic Operations.
The challenge for the military to effectively use the Electromagnetic Spectrum arises primarily from spectrum congestion, poor spectrum management, the environment and the impact of intentional disruption, principally from adversary Electronic Warfare capabilities.
As the Electromagnetic Environment becomes more congested and contested, the future multi-domain battlespace will need to operate in a coherent/co-ordinated manner, by integrating solutions into all of the military domains — Air, Land, Sea, Space and Cyber.
This Defence and Security Accelerator competition is seeking original and innovative ideas which can be developed into novel technology enabled concepts and techniques to address the following question:
‘How can UK Defence take a radically different approach to conducting operations effectively across / within the Electromagnetic Environment, in this increasingly Congested and Contested environment?’
We are looking for ideas from across the Electromagnetic Spectrum but primarily focused on the Radio and Microwave bands.
For this call we will not be interested in novel Metasurfaces to address these challenges. We currently have a Metasurfaces competition open on this.
2. Funding
Up to £1 million is available for phase 1 of this competition. Additional funding of up to £1 million may be available for phase 2.
3. Competition close
The competition closes at midday on 22 October 2018.
