Details
The Electrification of Heat Demonstration Project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a large-scale roll-out of heat pumps in Great Britain by installing heat pumps in a representative range of up to 750 homes. Additionally new products and services have been designed to overcome some of the barriers to deployment. Approximately £14.6 million was available under the Energy Innovation Programme.
The project objectives are to:
- demonstrate that heat pumps, including gas-electric hybrids, can deliver high consumer satisfaction across a wide range of consumers in Great Britain
- demonstrate the practical and technical feasibility of heat pumps, including gas-electric hybrids, across Great Britain’s diverse housing stock
- capture learning from the project to help improve awareness across the heating supply chain, raise acceptance and support wider deployment of heat pumps in Great Britain
- develop, test and evaluate innovative products and services that increase the appeal of heat pumps and identify optimal solutions for a wide range of homes
See Electrification of Heat Demonstration Project (closed) for more background.
The 3 appointed delivery contractors are:
- E.ON who will undertake the trial in Newcastle
- OVO Energy who will undertake the trial in the South East of England
- Warmworks who will undertake the trial in the South East of Scotland
A consortium led by Energy Systems Catapult (ESC) with Delta Energy and Environment and Oxford Computer Consultants was awarded the management contract for the project.
Project case studies
ESC has published written and video case studies highlighting the experiences of participating households with their heat pumps:
Other outputs from the project such as reports, data and further case studies will be published on the ESC site when available.
Project data
ESC also published the first set of project data. A data report outlines the project and explains the data and findings to date. The data in this initial release includes:
- total number of heat pumps installed
- breakdown of heat pump type for each installation
- breakdown of housing type (including building age) where heat pumps have been installed
They will publish further project data when available.
