In the last decade, Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service has invested in installing technology widely in prisons in England and Wales. The technology has included: in-cell telephony, self-service kiosks and in-cell laptops, and mobile devices for prison staff. This report focuses on the impact of the technology on: the communication of knowledge within prisons, prisoner wellbeing and confidence using IT, prisoner relationships inside and outside prison, prison violence, and staff job satisfaction and workload.
