Our response

We can confirm that the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (the department) does hold the information in scope of your request.

This information includes:

All submissions by police forces to the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard group:

There are two Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard (ATRS) record submissions for policing, and both of these have been published on GOV.UK.

These are:
a) Hampshire and Thames Valley Police: DARAT

b) West Midlands Police: exploratory analysis of sexual convictions

Policing is operationally independent from the government and it is not mandatory for them to complete the ATRS at present.

All Chief Constables have signed up to the Covenant for Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Policing (https://science.police.uk/delivery/resources/covenant-for-using-artificial-intelligence-ai-in-policing/) which adopts many of the relevant features of the ATRS.

Any guidance issued to police forces regarding the completion of the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard:

Policing organisations that have used the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard (ATRS) have been provided with the following ATRS guidance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-for-organisations-using-the-algorithmic-transparency-recording-standard) that is publicly available on GOV.UK.
