Foreign & Commonwealth Office's Archive inventory
In line with the recommendations of the Cary report into the colonial administration files, the FCO maintains a full inventory of its Archive holdings.
Documents
Details
A specialist external company first created the inventory for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 2013, primarily to capture information about non-standard collections. These are the records covered in the most detail, including in many cases a summary of the content of the record series.
The inventory is a continuously evolving document and can only provide a snapshot of holdings in the FCO’s working archive. We publish regular updates and endeavor to ensure it is as accurate as possible.
For further information, read the detailed guidance on the FCO’s Archive records.

May 2019 FCO Archive inventory
This inventory contains a snapshot of the FCO’s legacy paper file holdings as of April 2019. Entries are recorded in the inventory at series level and date range and number of items for that series is recorded.
It is a record of all paper record series currently held by FCO’s Archive Management Team in the FCO Central Archive. Paper records series held outside the Central FCO Archive by Overseas Posts and FCO Departments are also included for records created up to and including 2002. Routine personnel records series are excluded.
