The Government has ambitious targets regarding the deployment of fibre networks. The Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review outlined our plans for 15 million premises to have full fibre by 2025, and nationwide coverage by 2033. Road and street works account for 70% of the cost of fibre deployment. It is therefore critical that Government, local authorities, operators and contractors work together effectively to deliver this.

The England & Wales Street Works toolkit has been developed by government, HAUC (England), JAG UK and Street Works UK, along with local authorities, operators and contractors, to offer advice and best practice for engaging in street works. All examples are real-life case studies that have been endorsed by all parties.

The toolkit provide answers to common problems that arise during fibre builds around:

  • early engagement
  • permitting, noticing and traffic management
  • physical deployment and reinstatements
  • contractors

It is highly recommended that teams responsible for highways and street works have regard to its principles.
