Abandoned coal mines have the potential to provide a source of low carbon geothermal energy through utilising the thermal properties of mine water.

Anyone wanting to access coal mine workings for the purpose of a mine water heating, cooling or storage scheme or research project will require permission from the owner of the coal mine workings.

Application for an exploratory (testing) phase mine water heat access agreement £3000
Application for a production (operational) phase mine water heat access agreement £2750
Annual charges for a production (operational) phase mine water heat access agreement £1500 a year for each operational borehole
