The  Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has concluded this competition without awarding grant funding to support the establishment of a new National Academy focused on Mathematical Sciences. 

The government recognises the essential, valuable contributions of the mathematical sciences in science, engineering, innovation and growth in the UK and will explore how best to provide support and promote mathematics without supporting the creation of a new National Academy focused on Mathematical Sciences.

Background

In the Autumn Statement (22 November 2023), the government announced funding of up to £6 million, over 3 years, to support the establishment of a new national academy focused on mathematical sciences and consulted on the best way to establish the academy from 12 January 2024 to 25 February 2024.

On 27 March 2024 the government published a call for evidence response setting out the proposed focus and objectives for a national academy. As part of the response, draft requirements were published and public comments were invited until 10 April 2024.

The government launched an open competition for up to £6 million of grant funding to support the establishment of a new incipient National Academy focused on Mathematical Sciences, which was open for applications from 7 May 2024 until 4 June 2024.

  1. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has withdrawn the competition for the creation of a new national academy focused on mathematical sciences. Grant funding was not awarded.
